Got a question?

Date June 18, 2008

Hey there!  If you’ve got a question about the PHP job market - either as an employer, job seeker or freelance contractor, post it here.  Or email me at mgkimsal@gmail.com.  Or perhaps you’ve got a question about my recent book - the PHP Job Hunter’s Handbook. Again, feel free to drop me a line [...]

Who is the book aimed at?

Date June 7, 2008

This was a question I wrestled with when starting the book.  I personally have been doing PHP since 1996, so I’m not a ‘newbie’ either with PHP, or in the job market.  I’ve found that the further you go on in your career, the more specialized a job hunt can end up being.  Besides geographic [...]

Welcome back!

Date June 6, 2008

Hello all! First things first - the PHP Job Hunter’s Handbook was published on June 2 by php|architect!  Of course it’d be great if you were to go buy a copy or two - they make great Father’s Day or July 4th presents :)  In a few months they’ll even make great Labor day presents!
Where’ve [...]

Yahoo interview questions

Date June 26, 2007

Nick Halsted wrote a blog entry describing a set of Yahoo pre-interview questions used for PHP candidates.  I thought it would be useful to post a link here.  I am working on getting some input from Yahoo for the upcoming book as well.  A contact had showed some initial support, but getting that ironed out [...]

Lots of good stuff…

Date June 17, 2007

I have been poring through the responses, working them in to the book project, and there’s some really great stuff in there.  I got re-energized during the past two weeks, which has given me more oomph to get this book out.  I’d wanted to have it available for my OSCON presentation, but I don’t think [...]

Overdue update

Date June 1, 2007

Hello all!
It’s taking longer than I thought to parse through all the great responses to the survey.  There were over 30 detailed responses, and it’s proving to be more time consuming than I estimated to go through each one and make useful sense out of all of these.  I haven’t dropped this project, and will [...]

Status update

Date March 12, 2007

Thanks to everyone who has replied to the survey so far.  I got some good feedback from people, and will likely be adding another category to the survey for people hiring contractors instead of full time employees, and possibly a separate survey specifically for contractors.

PHP job book open survey

Date February 26, 2007

I’ve put together the first draft of the survey/interview questions.  I was initially planning on doing all face to face (or skype to skype) interviews with people, but I think time constraints are going to make that very difficult.  To get around that, I’m putting out the invitation to the PHP community to participate in [...]

Interview questions

Date February 25, 2007

I’m putting together my base set of questions to ask people involved in the hiring process at companies hiring PHP developers.  I’m aiming to talk to people from a wide variety of companies, including both large and small, and software shops vs. non-software shops.  In one sense almost any company ‘has’ a software department, but [...]

First update

Date February 25, 2007

I’ve spent the last couple days revisiting what I have since I’d put the PHP job book project on hold last year, and it’s really - well, it’s better than I remembered, which is encouraging.  Although I would not say I’m a professional writer, I think like many writers, I may be my own worst [...]
